How the axle works...

Axle
slides in --- 1/4 turn of screw locks it

6 inch axles available)
Probably
the most unique feature of the Gruven frame is the roller axle arrangement.
There is no wire or plastic roller cage with this design. Standard
roller frames use a roller
cage to provide friction to hold the roller cover on. Cages do
not add any strength to
the roller cover. A roller cover will maintain it's shape without
them. A "cageless"
design is much easier to clean and allows you to remove and clean
the roller endcap/bearings.
With the Gruven frame you install
or remove roller covers by removing the entire axle.
The axle clamp (shown above) is fitted with a slotted screw. A
simple 1/4 turn of the
screw (a screwdriver, 5-in-1, putty knife, a dime, etc.) releases
the axle from the frame
or tightens it in place.
The
axle can be positioned (slid back and forth) in the clamp to provide
an exact fit (not
all roller covers are the same length a 9"can be as much
as 1/8 longer or shorter). Because
we used "shouldered endcaps" and incorporate this adjustable
feature, you can position the
cover on the frame exactly -- without part of the cover hanging
over the end of the frame or
being too short for a particular cover (like with standard frames).
First, this prevents those
common open areas on the end of standard roller frames where paint
accumulates and leaves
"track lines" (where the cover slides on over the first
endcap). Second, an adjustable axle
gives a precision fit and keeps the roller from wandering from
side-to-side (slop) as you roll.
Eliminating the sideplay makes for straight, even, passes. It's
a very precise feel and makes
rolling much easier.
Different
length axles can be fitted to the basic Gruven frame. We offer optional axles
in
4, and 6" lengths (see order page). You can make a 4, 6,
or 9" roller out of the same frame.
The only thing that changes is the axle...the roller endcaps are
a universal fit. The same
endcaps you use with your standard 9" axle will work on all
the others. With the additional
axles you can have (3) frames in one -- no need to carry around
a bucket full of frames.
Because of how the Gruven disassembles, you can carry (3) frames
in your back pocket.
This really makes organizing your work vehicle easy. It saves
you money too, because you
will have (3) long-lasting frames in one.
